Principal's Message

Happy New Year and Happy 2019. This new calendar year has had a great beginning to it. We have had reasonable winter weather to welcome us back to school and a fantastic start with lots of great opportunities for our students. Our students were welcomed back to school with a variety of leadership opportunities at their disposal. Our blue vest supervisors and lunch monitors are back in full swing. We also have some new and exciting activities for our "Incredible Introducers", and the next round of student led clubs is beginning to unfold this week.

Along with those, the students who are interested in Choral Speech have been busy choosing groups and scripts, and are now in full rehearsal mode. As well extra-curricular basketball is in full swing for our grade 4-6 students, and students in grades 1-3 have an opportunity to learn basketball skills during the lunch hours on Fridays. Basketball is very exciting for our students, but to make it even more thrilling and challenging, Mrs. Poapst has arranged to bring in wheelchairs for the month of January. Therefore our students have the opportunity to learn both basketball and wheelchair skills, and they are loving both during their phys. ed. classes.

In celebration of the upcoming 2019 Jiffy Lube Alberta Scottie’s Tournament of Hearts Women’s Provincial Championship Curling that is happening in Stettler next week, our students are also learning and playing with the Rocks and Rings kits that we have at the school. This allows our students to learn the skills of curling right here in our gymnasium. However, our grade 4 students are also going to have an opportunity to watch some provincial curling and to participate in Rocks and Rings at the Stettler Recreation Centre when they travel there to participate in the Scotties’ Tournament on January 24. And speaking of the Stettler Recreation Centre, on Thursday, January 10, we were able to take our Student Lighthouse Team there to participate in the Torch Relay, as it travelled through Stettler making it’s way across Canada in celebration of the upcoming Canada Winter Games being held in Red Deer in February. Our students participated in some complimentary skating, listened to the speeches and celebrations upstairs in the HUB, had their photos taken with Waskasoo (the games mascot), and enjoyed the music of Renegrade Station.

Students are busy again this week with the first of three skiing dates taking place on Wednesday, January 16. Busses leave the school at 2:30 p.m. for a full evening of skiing for approximately 100 of our eager and excited students. Basketball also continues this week and on Friday, January 18, all students are invited to wear a shirt with a letter on it (or to tape a letter onto their shirts) to participate in Scrabble Day. There will be several spelling challenges with friends and classmates happening throughout the day, so we are looking forward to lots of academic fun. To keep up with other celebrations and activities at SES, please feel free to attend our upcoming assembly at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, January 25. We hope to see you there.
